Joaquim Filipe

Brief Bio
Joaquim B L Filipe is currently a Coordinator Professor of the School of Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (EST-Setúbal), Portugal. He got his PhD at the School of Computing of Staffordshire University, U.K, in 2000.
His main areas of research involve Artificial Intelligence and Multi-Agent System theory and applications to different domains, with an emphasis on social issues in activity coordination, especially in organizational modelling and simulation, where he has been actively involved in several R&D projects, including national and international programs. He represented EST-Setúbal in
several European projects.
He has over 200 publications, including papers in conferences and journals, edited books, and conference proceedings. He started several conference series, sponsored by INSTICC and technically co-sponsored or in cooperation with major International Associations.
He took part in over 100 conference and workshop program committees and he is on the editorial board of a Springer book series.

Kevin Warwick (honorary)

Brief Bio
Kevin Warwick is Professor of Cybernetics at the University of Reading, England, where he carries out research in artificial intelligence, control, robotics and biomedical engineering. He took his first degree at Aston University, followed by a PhD and research post at Imperial College London. He subsequently held positions at Oxford, Newcastle and Warwick Universities before being offered the Chair at Reading. He is a Chartered Engineer (CEng.) and is a Fellow of The Institution of Engineering & Technology (FIET). Kevin Warwick is the youngest person ever to become a Fellow of the City & Guilds of London Institu te (FCGI). He is the author or co-author of more than 500 research papers and has written or edited 27 books (three for general readership), as well as numerous magazine and newspaper articles on scientific and general subjects.
Kevin has been awarded higher doctorates (DSc) both by Imperial College and the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague and has received Honorary Doctorates from 6 Universities. He has appeared in the Guiness Book of Records for his research on several occasions and is perhaps best known for his implant self-experimentation, linking his own nervous system with a computer network.
The Institute of Physics selected Kevin as one of only 7 eminent scientists to illustrate the ethical impact their scientific work can have: the others being Galileo, Einstein, Curie, Nobel, Oppenheimer and Rotblat.

Janusz Kacprzyk graduated from Warsaw University of Technology, with M.Sc. in automatic control and CS, in 1977 Ph.D. in systems analysis, in 1991 D.Sc. in computer science. Professor of Computer Science at the Systems Research Institute, Polish Academy of Sciences, and Professor of Automatic Control at PIAP – Industrial Institute of Automation and Measurements; Honorary Professor of Mathematics, Yli Normal University, Xinjiang, China. Full Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Member of Academia Europaea and European Academy of Sciences and Arts. Foreign Member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Economic and Fi nancial Sciences (RACEF), Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters. Fellow of IEEE, IET, IFSA, EurAI, and SMIA. Doctor honoris causa of 4 universities. Frequent visiting professor in the USA, Italy, UK, Mexico, China, and Austria.  Main research interests: computation intelligence, notably fuzzy logic, decisions, optimization, control, data analysis and data mining, IT/ICT, mobile robotics, systems modeling etc.Main awards: 2006 IEEE CIS Pioneer Award in Fuzzy Systems for fuzzy dynamic programming, 2006 Sixth Kaufmann Prize and Gold Medal for pioneering works on soft computing in economics and management, 2007 Pioneer Award of the Silicon Valley Section of IEEE CIS for granular computing and computing in words, IFSA 2013 Award for lifetime achievements in fuzzy systems and service to the fuzzy community, 2014 World Automation Congress Lifetime Award for contributions to soft computing. Thomas Bäck

Thomas Bäck is professor of Computer Science at the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science, Leiden University, Netherlands, since 2002.

He received his PhD in Computer Science from Dortmund University, Germany, in 1994, and was leader of the Center for Applied Systems Analysis at the Informatik Centrum Dortmund until 2000.

Thomas received the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) Evolutionary Computation Pioneer Award for his contributions in synthesizing evolutionary computation (2015), was elected as a fellow of the International Society of Genetic and Evolutionary Computation (
ISGEC) for fundamental contributions to the field (2003), and received the best dissertation award from the "Gesellschaft für Informatik" in 1995.

Thomas has more than 300 publications, as well as two books on evolutionary algorithms: Evolutionary Algorithms in Theory and Practice (1996), Contemporary Evolution Strategies (2013). He is co-editor of the Handbook of Evolutionary Computation and the Handbook of Natural Computing. Thomas is also Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Natural Computing Series (Springer) and the journal Theoretical Computer Science C (Elsevier), and editorial board member of various journals.

Thomas’ research interests are in foundations and applications of evolutionary computation, efficient global optimization, and multiple objective optimization. Much of his recent research also addresses optimization methods in machine learning, e.g., for hyperparameter optimization, as well as supervised and unsupervised machine learning for smart industry applications.

Niki van Stein

Brief Bio
Niki van Stein is a researcher in the Natural Computing Group of LIACS and manager of the applied data science lab. She received her PhD in Computer Science from Leiden University in 2018. Niki her research interests are in explainable AI, automated design of algorithms, global (Bayesian) optimization and neural architecture search.

Christian Wagner

Brief Bio
Christian Wagner received his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2009 from the University of Essex, UK. He is currently a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham, and founding director of the Lab for Uncertainty in Data and Decision Making (LUCID). His research focusses on the capture, modelling & handling of uncertain data arising from heterogeneous data sources, with a particular emphasis on designing interpretable AI based decision support systems. In 2017, he was recognised as a RISE (Recognising Inspirational Scientists and Engineers) Connector by EPSRC. His work ranges from decision support in cyber security and environmental management to personalisation and control in manufacturing. He has led a series of research projects with partners from industry and government with an overall value of around £10m and co/developed multiple open source software frameworks, making cutting edge research accessible to research communities beyond computer science.

Dr Wagner is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems journal, Chair of the IEEE CIS Technical Committee on Fuzzy Systems and Task Force on Cyber Security; elected member-at-large of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) Administrative Committee for 2018-2020. He is a General Co-Chair of Fuzz-IEEE 2021 in Luxembourg, Europe.

Jonathan Garibaldi

Prof Jon Garibaldi's main research interest is in the modelling of human decision making, primarily in the context of medical applications. His work to date has concentrated on utilising fuzzy logic to model the imprecision and uncertainty inherent in medical knowledge representation and decision making. This has been applied in areas such as classification of breast cancer, identification of Alzheimer's disease, and the assessment of immediate neonatal outcome. A particular interest is in the transfer of medical intelligent systems into clinical use and this has led to the study of methods of evaluating intellig ent systems and mechanisms for their implementation. Prof Garibaldi also has an interest in generic machine learning, such as clustering, classification and optimisation, particularly when applied to the optimisation of decision making models, and in the study of adaptive and time-varying behaviour. ... H. K. Lam is a Reader from the Department of King's College London. His research interests include intelligent control, computational intelligence and machine learning. He has served as a program committee member, international advisory board member, invited session chair and publication chair for various international conferences and a reviewer for various books, international journals and international conferences. He was an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Express Briefs and is an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems, IET Control Theory and Applications, In ternational Journal of Fuzzy Systems, Neurocomputing and Nonlinear Dynamics; and guest editor for several international journals. Besides, he is on the editorial board of many internal journals. He was named as a highly cited researcher and is an IEEE fellow.

He is a coeditor of two edited volumes: Control of Chaotic Nonlinear Circuits (World Scientific, 2009) and Computational Intelligence and Its Applications (World Scientific, 2012), and author/coauthor of three monographs: Stability Analysis of Fuzzy-Model-Based Control Systems (Springer, 2011), Polynomial Fuzzy Model Based Control Systems (Springer, 2016) and Analysis and Synthesis for Interval Type-2 Fuzzy-Model-Based Systems (Springer, 2016).

Marie Cottrell

Pr. Marie Cottrell was born in Béthune (France) 1943. She was a student at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Sèvres, and received the Agrégation de Mathématiques degree in 1964 ( with 8° place), and the Thèse d'Etat (Modélisations de réseaux de neurones par des chaînes de Markov et autres applications) in 1988.

From 1964 to 1967, she was a High School Teacher. From 1967 to 1988, she was successively an Assistant and an Assistant Professor at the University of Paris and at the University of Paris-Sud (Orsay), except from 1970 to 1973, on which she was a Professor at the University of Habana, Cuba. From 19
89 to 2012, she was a full Professor at the University Paris 1 - Panthéon-Sorbonne. Since 2012, she is a Professor Emeritus.

She is a permanent invited professor at the University of Havana, a life member of the IEEE Society, an honorary member of the Cuban Society of Mathematics and Computation, an Honorary Doctor of the Aalto University School of Science and Technology and Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Habana.

Her research interests include stochastic algorithms, large deviation theory, machine learning and computational intelligence, theory and algorithms for artificial neural networks, linear and non linear exploratory data analysis, non linear forecasting methods. Since 1986, her main work deals with artificial and biological neural networks, Kohonen maps and their applications in data analysis.

She is the author of about 140 publications in this field. She is regularly solicited as referee or international conference program committee member. She organized several international conferences. She was in charge of the laboratory SAMM (Statistics, Analysis, Multidisciplinary Modelization) at the University Paris 1 until 2012.

I am an academic, innovator and applied technology specialist with over 15 years of experience in the development and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques in research and commercial areas. Presently I am a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) with the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Essex, U. K where I am founder and head the Intelligent Connected Societies Group, part of the Centre for Computational Intelligence and am member of the Intelligent Embedded Systems and Environments Group. I am also a Director at Interactive Coventry Ltd, steering committe e member for the Creative Science Foundation and currently appointed as an Eastern Arc thematic champion for culture, connection and creativity in science and health.

Over the course of my career, I have worked in both industrial and academia developing and applying nature inspired Computational Intelligence (CI) approaches for human centred systems related to various real-world domains such as smart environments, elderly care, energy optimization, industrial automation, information analysis, decision-making simulation, control systems and affective computing. I am interested in the development of user and task centred intelligently orchestrated and context aware pervasive computing systems. I am particularly interested in explainable and approximate reasoning techniques based on type-1 and type-2 fuzzy systems, hybrid computational intelligence techniques for real world applications, intelligent agents and AI driven virtual, augmented, and mixed reality systems.

I have successfully led and co-led several projects funded through Innovate UK, Harvard University, and the Newton Fund. I am currently institutional lead on a project funded by the Royal Academy of Engineers on capacity building in sub-Saharan Africa and supervising several KTP projects with leading UK businesses. I have published over 80 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, conferences, workshops, books and have two patents. I am an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems and have guest edited several journal special issues most notably in the Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments and the IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computational Intelligence and MDPI Remote Sensing. I am a fellow of the Higher Education Academy, member of the IEEE and serve on the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society’s Emergent Technologies Technical Committee.
